From a quiet village in Slovenia…
To the beating heart of Buenos Aires…
This t-shirt is a tribute to Viktor Sulčič, a man who created one of the world’s most recognized stadiums……..La Bombonera.
Born 1895 in a small slovenian village on the outskirts of metropolitan Trieste, he emigrated to Argentina in 1924, just after he finished his degree in architecture.
Sulčič was among the first architects to use reinforced concrete in his buildings, designing several churches and other buildings of interest, including the market Mercado de Abasto, which earned him a special award from the city authorities, but nobody even dreamed of what was coming next….
In 1931 the Boca Juniors club board bought the previously leased plot of land on which their old stadium was located. The decision was made to build a completely new stadium to replace the existing wooden venue. The project was handled by Viktor Sulčič and his arhitect biro.
As local residents refused to sell their land, there was just enough space to build one city block so instead of expanding, Sulcic had a vision to build the stadium vertically with steep stands rising almost at a right angle and giving it its unique shape and resembling the chocolate box……La Bombonera, the legend was born!
